There is probably much more home storage space in your house than you realise, it just takes a bit of “in the box” thinking. Totebox shares their top tips and tricks to improve storage in your house without breaking the bank.
Creative Ways to Organise Your Home
The bed, which takes up the most floor space in most bedrooms, provides an ideal opportunity for easy access storage.
Ottoman style beds may provide large storage space, but the beds are very expensive and stored contents can be awkward to access from a made-up bed. Some divan beds feature built-in drawers, but these usually offer very limited storage.
Plastic storage boxes provide easy access and inexpensive storage solution. They can be simply slid under the bed and hidden from view by a fitted valance sheet. To maximise storage space, choose beds with good floor clearance to accept larger storage boxes.
Plastic attached lid containers, such as Toteboxes, provide moth-proof storage for the wardrobe top shelf and can be placed on the floor or bottom shelf to separate clean items from shoes.
Toteboxes are also ideal for storing children’s toys. They look great in the kids’ bedrooms where they can be simply stacked on top of each other.
Outside of the bedroom; the attic, cellar, under-stair cupboard, garage and shed provide the best opportunities for storage. However, they are typically fitted with inefficient shelving or filled to the gunwales with an inaccessible assortment of cardboard boxes, suitcases and bags.
Plastic storage crates offer the perfect space and money-saving solution. They are less expensive than most shelving units and because they can be stacked on top of each other, provide denser storage – so you can pack away more stuff at less cost.
Plastic containers are quick and easy to stack and unstack, so contents are much more accessible than sifting through an array of cardboard boxes and bags.
Because plastic containers are far stronger than cardboard boxes, they can be stacked high without risk of crushing the contents. This means you can store seasonal items, that you only need once a year, at the bottom of the pile with boxes requiring more regular access stacked on top. Plastic attached lid containers will also protect your items from damp and keep out pests.
Any system will fall flat if you can’t quickly find stored items, so identification is key. A simple bold label clearly identifies container contents. Totebox supply a card clip that securely holds labels in place. Totebox containers are available in a choice of colours, helping you to colour code items by theme.
Attached lid stacking & nesting containers are the most popular plastic boxes for home use. Totebox manufactures their famous Original Totebox attached lid containers in the UK. They securely stack with lids closed and nest inside each other with lids open, so they are themselves easily stored when not in use. The lid keeps out dust and other contaminants. They are ideal for both permanent storage and temporary uses such as seasonal storage or house moves.
Attached lid stacking containers, such as the Totebox range of Euro Stacking Containers, have vertical sides so they can store a little more stuff than stack-nest models (which have tapered sides to facilitate nesting). Totebox Euro stacking containers also allow users to create modular compact storage units with smaller containers stacking 2-up (side-by-side) on larger models. The lid provides a more secure rainproof barrier so they can be stored outside.
Not all plastic containers offer the same level of strength and durability. Plastic boxes commonly sold at popular retail outlets may be relatively cheap but they tend to break after a short time and cannot be stacked particularly high, presenting a potential safety risk if they are carrying anything but light loads. Industrial strength plastic containers, such as those stocked by Totebox, are designed for tough storage and handling operations in factories and warehouses where they typically carry unit loads exceeding 20Kg and are stacked up to ten high. They cost a little more but should last a lifetime.
